The sea in front of Sun beach is the Indian Ocean. Going south it’s a straight line to Antarctica. The ocean here is clean and warm offering swimming and surfing for beginners and the experienced. In Hikkaduwa and nearby you will find some of the finest surf beaches in Sri Lanka. Hikkaduwa Bay provides calm water swimming for those with smaller children.
Prime surf season is from October – April. Board riders should talk to the locals. There are two breaks out-front. The beach break and the reef break, 100 metres along the beach. The reef break is one of the most consistent spots with lefts and rights over a flat coral reef.
There are a number of good less populated breaks further along the coast. Tuk-Tuk drivers or our minibus service will take you and your board to good spots.
Boards can be hired on the beach and from a nearby surf shops. There are local instructors on the beach for beginners.
Sunbeach has a locked storeroom for your surf boards.
DIVING AND SNORKELING
For diving and snorkeling, there are a number of PADI instructors and Dive Schools in Hikkaduwa. PADI open water course advanced courses and single dives can all be arranged. For experienced divers there are ship wrecks and reefs to be explored.
Snorkeling equipment can be hired nearby. Glass bottomed boats can be hired to explore the local reef.
The south coast of Sri Lanka has a reputation as one of the very best places in the world to see both Blue Whales and Sperm Whales. Large pods of Spinner Dolphins are also common. The best time is January through to April. April is a major migration time.

Cricket is more than a passion in Sri Lanka and the island currently has a great team that was runner up in the 2012 World 20/20 Championship. The cricket ground in Galle, is right next to The Fort, and is regarded by many as one of the most picturesque sports grounds in the world.
Sun Beach is a perfect place to stay if you come for the cricket. We can arrange everything including tickets, transport to and from the ground, breakfast and dinner at suitable times. We even have cable TV for the evening wrap ups and replays!
The local area takes in the UNESCO World Heritage City of Galle It is about 25 minutes away. A visit to the 400 year old fort is a must, with interesting shopping and lots of pleasant places to have a drink and eat lunch.
Its well worth travelling down the coast to explore the world Galle, Unawatuna and beyond.
