|THE BEACH AND AREA
The sea is the cleanest you will find anywhere in the Far East: wonderfully warm, clean and offering swimming, surfing for beginners to the experienced, plus scuba, glass bottomed boats & snorkeling. A life-guard service operates on the beach and advise is readily available from our staff. The beach is long, wide and lined with small bars and restaurants nestled amongst the palm and coconut trees and peaceful walks can be taken to the local fishing village of Dodonduwa or to Hikkaduwa’s calm sandy bay.
Beachside, there are two surf breaks — the beach break opposite Sunbeach Hotel and the reef break 100 yards along the beach. The reef break is one of the most consistent spots with lefts and rights on a flat coral reef. For quieter spots there are a number of good breaks along the coast. Local instructors can be found and surf and boogie boards can be hired on the beach.
DIVING AND SNORKELING
November to April is the best season for diving and there are a number of qualified PADI instructors at Dive schools in the area. PADI open water courses, advanced courses and single dives can all be arranged. For the more experienced there are ship-wrecks and reefs to be explored. Snorkeling equipment can be hired and the reef explored from the beach at Hikkaduwa. Glass-bottomed boats can be hired to explore the local reef.
The whale watching is spectacular. We offer day trips down the coast to some of the most dramatic and accessible whale watching in the world near Mirissa. The best times are January to April.
A passion for most people in the country, cricket has produced some outstanding players in Sri Lanka. Stadiums in Galle, Colombo and Kandy offer a colourful and exciting experience. The Australians visit in 2012 during March and April playing Test, one day and 20:20 matches. Sunbeach is offering cricket fans a package to include room with breakfast, evening meal, tickets to each day of play and transport to and from the grounds at Galle. For further information please e-mail Chaminda at the hotel to check on current availability.
The main road outside the hotel separates the beachside from the jungle where there are many local excursions including lagoon and rainforest safaris including visits to temples other places of interest.
Bikes can be hired or tuk-tuks will take you through the myriad of dirt roads, through lush foliage, rice fields and villages. There are two large lagoons, one at Dodonduwa, ‘Blue lagoon’ and ‘Bird Lake’ where canoes can be hired. Extensive wildlife and beautiful surroundings offer many unforgettable experiences.
Its well worth travelling down the coast to explore the world Galle, Unawatuna and beyond.
